Fool’s Gold is currently on tour through Europe, playing several festival gigs which will conclude with slots at Leeds and Reading Festivals. The afro-pop collective has just garnered a 5 star review from the London Times of a recent show in Brighton. Check out a few of the nice words they had to say about the performance:
“But with an almost impish sense of delight as if the meagreness of the crowd merely served to throw down the gauntlet that’s what Fool’s Gold set about doing. From the beginning it was a synergy of incongruent parts. It took maybe seven or eight minutes for the scampering, cowbell-pummeling syncopations of Bark and Bite to accelerate to a euphoric machinegun rattle. For the duration, the Fedora-wearing singer Luke Top seemed like a man out of time, his tremulously beatific tones hovering at a remove from it all.”
-The London Times
Fool’s Gold was also recently interviewed for Mewbox, discussing the band, their different incarnations and their recent tour experiences.

Last week, Fool’s Gold performed at the Hollywood Bowl with an incredible World Music lineup including Baaba Maal, Tinariwen and Yeasayer. The LA Times reviewed the show, raving that Fool’s Gold was the highlight of the evening. Check out what they had to say:
“But the night’s greatest forward momentum, in musical terms, was supplied by stateside indie progressives. Los Angeles band Fool’s Gold opened the show with a conga player and saxophone-flutist in its core seven-man lineup and a sound that owes as much to the keening vocals and jumpy guitars of the Smiths as it does to its irresistible Congolese-Ethiopian tempos.
“Fool’s Gold’s penchant for elaborating melodies on electric guitar that might normally be heard on an eight-string Zairian lyre isn’t mere novelty for novelty’s sake. It’s symptomatic of a growing number of young bands whose members have descended from all over the world and can create polyglot fusions that sound fully organic rather than sampled or synthesized.”

Fool’s Gold has been hard at work, bringing their unique, upbeat world music to the far stretches of the globe. The band has just wrapped up their European Tour and The Guardian chimed in with a stellar review of their last show in Leeds.
“With a six-piece lineup (slimmed down from the 13 musicians on their recent debut) shaking their maracas, it’s music that proves impossible not to dance to, and the joyful sounds transform a wary audience into a clapping, dancing throng. The saxophone is often the lead instrument, giving Surprise Hotel and Nadine euphoric, instantly memorable melodies.”

The Huffington Post has recently included Fool’s Gold on their list of the 9 best up-and-coming Los Angeles bands. The venerable internet newspaper had a lot to say about the universal appeal of Fool’s Gold’s fun, upbeat blend of world music.
“Drawing influences from all over the globe, including (but not limited to) Ethiopian soul, Cuban conga, and Brazilian funk, Fool’s Gold isn’t your pony-tailed step-dad’s world music (no didgeridoos here), nor is it your typical sampling and remixing (not that we’re mad at that, Diplo). The point is this isn’t cultural appropriation; it is musical appreciation.”

IAMSOUND will also be putting out some unreleased music from Fool’s Gold as a part of the LA Collection, a monthly series of 7-inch split singles featuring some of LA’s best local bands.
