The Guardian seems certain that Brooklyn is “the USA’s hippest square-few-miles” and Tanlines may just be the hippest thing to come out of it. The duo have received rave reviews after releasing their debut EP Settings last week.
Tanlines is noted as one of the best new bands to come out of Brooklyn, although the pair have been remixing and producing other artists for quite some time. The Guardian states, “They sound like a cerebral take on a tropical dance troupe, their music full of Caribbean flavours and hypnotic rhythms, but it feels organic even though some of it is electronic.”
Tanlines are playing a string of shows this weekend at SXSW. For those of you in Austin this week – be sure to check out their 10:15 pm set tonight at the GLS Party, where they’ll be playing with other acts like Neon Indian and Ra Ra Riot, or catch them tomorrow at the Pop Montreal Showcase – they go on at 12 midnight.

In a review of the single “Real Life”, Pitchfork most recently jumped onto the Tanlines bandwagon, calling the track “neon-synthed pop you could imagine going over equally well at a dance party or, seriously, a sporting event.” The tribal percussion and tropical ambiance that coats this entire record is sure to deliver an early summer this year.

Tanlines are no strangers to remixes. Over the past year, they have remixed tracks from Au Revoir Simone, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Tough Alliance, Glasser, and most recently, Solid Ground. The Brooklyn production duo are now gearing up for the release of their new Settings EP, which is due out March 9th on True Panther.
The first single, “Real Life” (now available on iTunes) is a tropical jam, packed with complex percussion and haunting chants, akin to the group’s best work. A Memory Tapes remix of “Real Life” has surfaced, which will reportedly be included on the EP. The Memory Tapes remix remains true to the upbeat pulse of the original track, yet adds tender synths to this bouncy single.

The guys from Tanlines recently sat down for an interview with DazedDigital.com to promote the January 12th release of their new digital single on iTunes. Eric and Jesse discussed a wide range of topics including the origins of their name, auditioning for Lauren Hill, and the (not so) low-key visual aesthetic of their website. The Brooklyn-based production duo is currently on tour with Julian Casablancas and fellow-WECL gems Telepathe.
Tanlines‘ blend of tropical-infused, lo-fi experimental pop is surely to be perfect cure for those winter blues this season. For licensing info, contact creativelicensing@worldsend.com.
