Further adding to the anticipation surrounding their album release, Traverse City/Chicago goth trio SALEM have recently been featured in NME Magazine. Last week, the band debuted the first track from their album, “King Night” on Stereogum and the response was overwhelming, getting both attention and praise from several of music’s most well respected news websites and blogs.
Along with the universal acclaim and NME giving its nod of approval, there is now a consensus that SALEM may have created one of the most unique and ambitious albums to be released this year.
“…The long-player has been three years in the making and has been preceded by similar buzz to that of Crystal Castles’ arrival. Refreshingly, the hype doesn’t look to be unsubstantiated. The band managed to bag legendary LA producer Dave Sardy to mix their bedroom recordings, transforming the eponymous debut from nasty lo-fi laptop atmospherics into one of the most vast and unforgiving debut albums you’ll hear all year.”

“They establish an elegant, pristine goth shoegaze that now and then drops out weird, introverted dance anthems. Or deep, bowel-shaking bass rumbles accompanied by warping atmospherics.”
“In just under four minutes, the group manages to combine earth-shattering bass, dirty south beats, choral vocals and swirling shoegazey synths into a somehow coherent package.”

Last week, IAMSOUND Records announced that Salem’s debut album King Night will be released on September 28th. Anticipation is already mounting for the release from these goth trailblazers, who have been credited as the forefathers of new subgenre drag (aka witch-house). Mixed by Dave Sardy (LCD Soundsystem, Band Of Horses, Spoon), the album accents Salem’s ability to create chilling soundscapes, striking a delicate balance between menacing and serene.
LA Weekly is the latest to feature Salem, commenting that the album is “Like a thick, toxic fog, their particular brand of darkwave music (see Cold Cave, the XX) hangs low to the ground — sludgy, skulking stuff that’s far too easy to get lost in.”

IAMSOUND Records is in full force, gearing up for the release of the highly-anticipated debut album from Salem. Before Salem has even released an album, the Michigan outfit has spawned an entirely new subgenre known as witch-house, or drag. Last week, Pitchfork released an extensive feature on this developing subgenre, loosely defining the scene as “ghostly, slow-moving electro-pop.” Pitchfork goes on to discuss the various artists that identify with this aesthetic influence, which include Salem, oOoOO, and Balem Acab to name a few.
This week, Pitchfork published a feature on Salem, which includes all the album release details and tracklisting. Be sure to check out these great features for a little clarity on this exciting new group.

IAMSOUND Records’ SXSW party was the talk of Austin at this year’s festival. The party, which featured a fantastic lineup including Sleigh Bells, jj, Salem, Fool’s Gold, and others was jam packed from the minute they opened the doors all the way to closing time. We would like to send a special thank you out to anyone that attended the event and stuck it out through the crowded sets to see these rare, intimate performances.
For those of you that missed this great event, be sure to check out the full set of pictures at www.shadowscene.com for a recap of the performances, the crowd and the mayhem.

Billboard Magazine recently featured our sister label, IAMSOUND Records as one of their up-and-coming indie labels in 2010. The feature focused on indie imprints chosen by their distributors that are re-defining the music marketplace in these harsh economic times. IAMSOUND was chosen by RED Distribution to be a leader in 2010, based on their success as indie tastemakers over the last year.
There’s no doubt that the last few years have been very magical for IAMSOUND, who released new music by some of the music’s best new artists including Florence And The Machine, Little Boots, Telepathe, Fool’s Gold, and many others.
The new year looks to be just as amazing. 2010 plans for IAMSOUND include fresh albums from the newly-signed Salem and electro-goddesses Telepathe, as well as a series 7-inch singles released in conjunction with Pure Groove Records, the first of which featuring LA locals We Are The World.
