RCRD LBL Hosts Exclusive Apache Beat Remix Download

“Who would have thought it – Apache Beat, just as at home in Fabric as they are on Native American reservations. Cubic Zirconia have turned “Your Powers Are Magic” into something of a totem pole for club kids and chieftains alike, huge, whomping bass bins stacked high to rally around, vocals chopped and screwed into strange mantras.”

MoZella played guest editor this week at Forever 21’s fashion blog, the skinny, in which she discusses her favorite fashion trends (hint: fun and a little retro, like her music!).
She’s also the featured MTV Artist for this week’s episode of The City – her song “Manhattan” closes the episode – look for it about 20 minutes in, seen here.  Check out The City to see her featured artist page at MTV.  The photos above were taken at her showcase, fittingly in Manhattan last week.

Fool’s Gold Steals The Night

fools gold green live blog

Fool’s Gold did a number at the IAMSOUND CMJ party apparently, because critics likened their amazing set to of out-of-body experience.  NPR’s Bob Boilen enjoyed their set so much he proclaimed, “I also forgot the fact that I had arms and legs and lived on planet earth.”  He then threw out an official invite to Fool’s Gold to play at the NPR studios, and urged his readers to witness the rhythmic, cross-cultural pop explosion that is Fool’s Gold whenever they could.  Boilen highlighted the entire IAMSOUND showcase, which included sets by Suckers, Telepathe, and Apache Beat.  Go to NPR’s music blog All Songs Considered to see the full review.

New York Times’ GLORIOUS CMJ Review Of Fool’s Gold

From the New York Times

“I got a head start on CMJ on Monday night, when Fool’s Gold played the
Knitting Factory in Brooklyn before its two CMJ shows: Tuesday at midnight
at the Suffolk (107 Suffolk Street) and Wednesday at midnight at the Bowery
Poetry Club (308 Bowery). It’s a Los Angeles band that loves African and
Middle Eastern music, building identifiable but cross-cultural grooves with
plenty of percussion (up to four members of the eight-man band) and pinpoint
interlocking guitars.

Monday’s set, by design or coincidence, worked its way northward: from
six-beat basslines with roots in the thumb-piano traditions of Zimbabwe,
through the bounce and meshed guitars of Congolese soukous
and on past the Sahara to the drones, trance-inducing bass lines and modal
inflections of Moroccan gnawa music. The band locked into each vamp until
the entire audience was dancing.

Fool’s Gold is far more Afro-traditionalist than, for instance, the
African-inflected new wave of Vampire Weekend or Yeasayer, but its songs are
fusions rather than direct imitations ‹ especially with the raspy, fervent
North African-tinged phrasing of its lead singer, Luke Top. I’m usually
skeptical of Americans attempting to master African rock, but Fool’s Gold
gets deep in the groove.

MoZella’s “Magic” Becomes Google/Verizon’s Battle Song

Posted: October 19th, 2009 | Author: admin | Filed under: All Artists, Mozella | No Comments »

mozella beret blogMoZella will be playing her first show with her new 6 piece band tonight at the Hotel Café in Hollywood, for all you Angelenos.  She will be on stage at 8:00pm.  Her new album Belle Isle is released tomorrow, October 20th, on Motown.  Come out to the show tonight and hear her hit “Magic“, which is currently Verizon’s battle song in the middle of their smart phone war with AT&T.

Verizon, the nation’s biggest wireless network, has concluded a deal to develop mobile phones and other gadgets based on Google’s Android mobile operating system. Verizon will introduce two Android phones this year and also plan to roll out a number of smart phones. Their goal is to take down the iPhone, the king of the smart phone Jungle.

Verizon has used the MoZella song “Magic” in their “iDon’t” TV ads, probably because it sounds like a song that Apple would use for an iPhone Advert. Said MoZella, “I’m happy that Verizon has used my song, but I didn’t know I would be dragged into the spat between Google and Apple…”
